B/A GJA BRANCH URGES THE MEDIA TO PRIORITIZE ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN



The Brong Ahafo branch of Ghana Journalists Association has expressed their condolences to the family and well wishers of a colleague in the inky fraternity who has passed on through a gory  head on collision accident which occurred on Monday dawn off the Sunyani-Mankranso road.

In a press release signed by the secretary Dennis Peprah, the association indicated the sadden demise of the former worker of Berekum based Shalom Radio, Pious Agyemang reechoes the need for media practitioners to drum loud the need for quality roads in the country.

Expatiating further on the purpose of the release in a radio interview with Kwasi Kumi Boadu KKb on Sunyani based Sky FM, he called on media practitioners to partner with government agencies responsible for road safety such as Ghana Highways Authority, Urban Roads Department as well as the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) to intensify road safety awareness in their scope of works.

“radio talk shows, journal articles and documentaries on road accidents should dominate our works to raise red flags on some of the routes that are in deplorable state and are prone to motor accidents" Mr Peprah advised.

The Ghana News Agency media attaché to the NRSC however called on the other stakeholders in the transport industry to actively play their part to curtail the rampant carnage on our roads.

“transport unions have to ensure vehicle owners and drivers under their union put on scale are road worthy as well as decency among the drivers. I will again caution passengers who exert unnecessary pressure on drivers to speed up, likewise quarrelsome ones should desist from such detracting attitude. In our quest for road safety we easily forget about the crucial role mechanics play, we therefore call on them to use the appropriate parts in fixing faulty cars and where they lack expertise refer to their colleagues to save lives” he pleaded.

The Mankranso-Sunyani stretch is the same place where dancehall dive Ebony met her untimely death in February this year in a similar gory accident.

Before the demise of Mr Agyemang, he was the general manager of Shalom Radio as well as Bombisco Multimedia an event organizing company based in Berekum.
