Staff of Mantukwa D/A Basic School and members of community

The Fiapre local chapter of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has orgainized a one day symposium for pupils, teachers and guardians of the Mantukwa D/A Basic School in the Sunyani West district in Brong Ahafo.

The local chairman, Mr Justice Annor Addai noted the exercise was to create awareness on the need to educate a girl child."we record a lot of teenage pregnancies in our district most especially with pupils in the junior high school hence we decided to collaborate with the Regional Department of Childen to organize this exercise to educate all stakeholders involved in the upbringing of the girl child to know the need to keep them in school. We have also spoken to our teachers to abstain from any form of sexually related affair with any pupil 'cos the association won't come to your rescue when found culpable of such act" he hinted.

Mr Solomon Yaw Ankamah, the regional director of the Department of Children in his speech called on parents to take keen interest in monitoring their female wards' activities to correct them when they go wayward. He again entreated parents to give their children the right sex education to guide and guard them from falling prey to unscrupulous persons.

In conclusion he spoke against child labour which is quite predominant in rural areas.

"We don't prevent a parent from engaging the ward in basic household chores and vocational skills, but it should not be within school hours and it shouldn't harm the child emotionally, physically or psychologically. If you fall foul to the law you can be sentenced at least half a year, fined or both. Let us be bold to report people who abuse children in our community" Mr Ankamah admonished.

Mr Sampson  Alinyina Sampana, the Sunyani chairman of the association seized the opportunity to call on the young ones to take advantage of the education system to study hard to equip themselves for the future ahead of them.

"The only gift you can give yourself as a young child is to learn to be able to fit into the technological world ahead of you. Many of us have regretted for not studying extremely hard in our childhood days. You are previlleged hence take advantage of the systems available to you and become the best of yoursel Mr Sampana advised.
